ABOUT

 

Liz Filios is an actor, composer and teaching artist. Her music is known for its warmth and vulnerability. She is the director of choral music at Play On Philly, a co-founder of the Pennsylvania Theatre Institute and the Bearded Ladies Cabaret, and a composer in residence at the Abington Friends School.

Liz originated the roles of Perdita in IL RACCONTO D'INVERNO and Miranda in LA TEMPESTA with the International Opera Theatre in Cittá della Pieve, Italy. She has created and performed theatre for children in Khayelitsha, South Africa, Chennai, India and Caracas, Venezuela; and toured the US with the Kennedy Center's Theatre for Young Audiences Program.
 

Liz co-wrote and hosted The Sunny Side Up Show, a national children's television program on PBSKids' Sprout. In 2020, Liz founded Storytime in the Zoom Room, a free interactive learning space for children and caretakers, supported by Theatre Horizon and the Free Library of Philadelphia's Early Learning Program.

Liz composed and performed as The Muse in AN ILIAD with Peter DeLaurier in 2016 and Greg Wood in 2020. Her score received a Barrymore nomination for Best Original Music. Additional sound design/composition credits include: HAMLET, THE ICE PRINCESS, SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE (Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival), D-PAD by Jeremy Gable (Theatre Exile), THE WINTER'S TALE (Folger Theatre), THE MATCHMAKER (People's Light), SHAKESPEARE & THE ZOMBIE PLAGUE OF 1590 (Orlando Shakespeare Playfest) and A LITTLE PRINCESS, adapted by Suli Holum and Priyanka Shetty (Quintessence Theatre Group). 

 

As a recording artist, Liz appears on Toby Twining's Eurydice (Cantalope Music), Johnny Showcase & the Mystic Ticket's The Octopus, Old Town Wake's EPs, Bedlam; and Alex Dowling's There in the Light and the Darkness of the Self and of the Other, based on Etel Adnan's poem, adapted by Blanka Zizka.

 

Liz is currently developing SWEETWATER, a new musical about the Women's Airforce Service Program of WWII with Patricia Noonan; and TWELFTH NIGHT, O LO QUE QUIERAS, a bilingual musical adaptation with Tanaquil Márquez.

Liz is a graduate of the University of Michigan (BFA Musical Theatre). She studied Gamelan at the Çudamani Summer Institute, and directing at the Cape Town Opera in South Africa. She is a Barrymore Award Winner, an Independence Foundation Fellow, and a recipient of the F. Otto Haas Award for Emerging Theatre Artist.
